What are the penalties for a misdemeanor in St. Petersburg?
Under state law, there are two types of misdemeanor, and each carries its own level of punishment:
- Misdemeanor of the First Degree - Up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine
- Misdemeanor of the Second Degree - Up to sixty days in jail and a $500 fine
It is often possible to negotiate with the prosecutor to allow the defendant to serve some or all of the term of imprisonment on probation. Certain offenses may carry additional penalties, such as mandatory community service, substance abuse treatment for drug crimes, or anger management classes for
domestic violence offenses. If you are convicted of a
sex crime, you can be required to register as a sex offender, which makes your personal information and photo available to the public through an online database.
Even after serving the full terms of your sentence, you would have to live with a conviction on your criminal record, a fact which can pose serious difficulties when you apply for credit or housing, as well as when you are required to disclose the fact on an application for employment. You may be able to protect your future and avoid such negative consequences by retaining our services early in the case.
